“Chase Elliott than thở: ‘Anh ta quay về New Zealand để kể cho bạn bè biết chúng tôi kém cỏi’, khi tay đua Cup thua rơi vào tay ringer Shane van Gisbergen tại Chicago.”

Shane van Gisbergen, the three-time Supercars champion, has become the first driver in 60 years to win the Cup in their debut race. The Kiwi driver was able to utilize his superior road racing experience compared to the Cup drivers to gain an advantage for himself and ultimately emerged victorious in a comfortable fashion, surviving multiple restarts and overcoming wet conditions in a shortened race. Chase Elliott, the 2020 Cup champion, was one of the contenders vying for the win on Sunday. Despite showcasing his talent on the road course, he finished in P3 behind the winner and P2 Justin Haley. Discussing van Gisbergen’s performance after the race, Elliott pointed out that the Cup drivers were weak compared to the Kiwis in their street course debut. He remarked, “He put a clinic on. He’s going back to New Zealand to tell his buddies how bad we are.” On social media following the race, the driver of the No. 9 Chevy Camaro ZL1 echoed his sentiments, saying, “He’s in his own league, and in my opinion, he’s doing a heck of a job. I don’t want to speak for anybody else, but he made me look pretty bad, and I think the rest of us as well. It makes you hungry to go to work and try to be better.” The uncertainty on the track, combined with wet conditions, made Chicago a challenging race in the 2023 season. Elliott attributed his failure to win the race to the rain. He asserted that he could have won under normal conditions but added that it provided some extra entertainment for the TV audience. “I mean, I think the rain might have helped a little bit. If not, personally I think it would have been a single-file race. I think the rain adds an extra element of excitement for the TV or the fans here at the racetrack,” Elliott said. Reflecting on what he needed and his experience in Chicago, he praised NASCAR and questioned whether he still races against time. Despite the rain ruining most of the pre and post-race concerts, he was confident that the event was a success. Elliott believes that the fans and the drivers did well, and the drivers executed perfectly to win the races.
